The History and Culture of the Costanoan Rumsen Carmel Tribe

The Costanoan Rumsen Carmel Tribe inhabited the area along the Carmel River for thousands of years. There is still evidence of their habitation sites in Garland Ranch Regional Park. As one of the Ohlone tribelets in the Monterey region, they were instrumental in the construction of the Carmel Mission. In order to escape continued enslavement, the tribe moved south and settled in Southern California in 1864. Today, the tribe has over 2,000 members.

This special exhibit will educate the public on the history of their ancestral lands in this region, their contribution to the Mission, and their cultural practices. As a critical part of the exhibit, there are several videos that will be shown in the exhibit area that enhance visitors’ understanding of their culture.

The Costanoan Rumsen Tribe is committed to reclaiming their cultural practices, language, and ancestral lands in the Monterey area and to educating the public on their existence and history, concern for the environment, and desire for unity amongst all peoples.
