DESCRIPTION:Join the National Steinbeck Center for a deep dive into John Steinbeck and Monterey with the 2025 exhibition “Steinbeck in Monterey” opening January 24\, 2025 at the Monterey History and Art Association at Stanton Center.  \n\n\n\nThe City of Monterey was Steinbeck’s stomping ground through his childhood and into his thirties. Here\, he had some of the foundational experiences of his life that appear in his writing\, again and again. This exhibit explores the interplay between living and writing.

SUMMARY:de la Torre Adobe Tour
DESCRIPTION:Myron Oliver was one of the founders of the Monterey History and Art Association in 1931. His home\, the de la Torre adobe on Pierce Street is on the market. \n\n\n\nMHAA membership has been graciously invited to tour the adobe by Angolee Bode of CØMPASS Realty. \n\n\n\nThe adobe is located at 500 Pierce Street just above Friendly Park. \n\n\n\n\nMyron and His Mother\n\n\n\nLiving Room\n\n\n\n\nOpen House and Self-guided Tour Invitation \n\n\n\nMyron Oliver (1891 – 1967) \n\n\n\nIn 1893 Joseph Kurtz Oliver\, brought his family to Pacific Grove where he had accepted a position as art instructor in a new college. The school foundered\, so Mr. Oliver opened an art-supplies store near Monterey’s pier. His young son\, Myron\, worked there and met practically all the artists who came to the Monterey Peninsula because they all came to Father Oliver’s store for supplies. By 1919 Myron was attending Stanford University\, and that summer William Merritt Chase taught in Carmel-by-the-Sea under the auspices of the Carmel Arts and Crafts Club. Myron traded his services as a chauffeur to the great man in exchange for lessons. Like Myron\, Effie Fortune and Armin Hansen were also founders of the Monterey History and Art Association. In February 1924 Myron Oliver and his wife became owners of the de la Torre adobe and thereafter remade the adobe into the beautiful home structure it is today.
