DESCRIPTION:Tickets \n\n\n\nMonterey History and Art Association is hosting a history lecture series this winter in the Stanton Center Theater on Custom House Plaza.  The series\, Histories of the Monterey Waterfront\, explores some of the histories of this unique place.  We are fortunate that some of our region’s top presenters have agreed to participate in this series. \n\n\n\nGreg HendersonLewis Josselyn: Pioneer photographer of Carmel and Monterey County\, 1900–1950 \n\n\n\nThis presentation examines the life and work of Lewis Josselyn\, whose photographs document the artistic\, civic\, and architectural development of Carmel-by-the-Sea and the broader Monterey County region during the first half of the twentieth century.  \n\n\n\nGreg Henderson is a historian\, author\, and genealogist specializing in the early history of Carmel-by-the-Sea and Monterey County. He has published multiple books and articles on the region’s founding families\, artists\, and photographers\, including an in-depth study of Lewis Josselyn. \n\n\n\nJohn SandersThe Magnificent\, World Famous Hotel Del Monte Bathing Pavilion \n\n\n\nHotel Del Monte\, California’s pioneering Victorian-era resort theme park\, drew world acclaim after its opening in 1880. The hotel’s technologically advanced bath-house with its heated\, crystalline sea green waters\, became one of the theme park’s main attractions in the 19th Century. DESCRIPTION:Tickets \n\n\n\nMonterey History and Art Association is hosting a history lecture series this winter in the Stanton Center Theater on Custom House Plaza.  The series\, Histories of the Monterey Waterfront\, explores some of the histories of this unique place.  We are fortunate that some of our region’s top presenters have agreed to participate in this series. \n\n\n\nCameron BinkleyAnton C. Heidrick: The Life and Photos of an Army Bandsman on the Monterey Peninsula \n\n\n\nThis presentation examines the life and work of Anton C. Heidrick\, an early twentieth-century Monterey photographer who specialized in panoramic scenes and military subjects.  \n\n\n\nCameron Binkley is the Command Historian for the Defense Language Institute at the Presidio of Monterey. DESCRIPTION:Tickets \n\n\n\nMonterey History and Art Association is hosting a history lecture series this winter in the Stanton Center Theater on Custom House Plaza.  The series\, Histories of the Monterey Waterfront\, explores some of the histories of this unique place.  We are fortunate that some of our region’s top presenters have agreed to participate in this series. \n\n\n\nTim ThomasA is for Abalone: The Japanese on the Monterey Wharf\, 1900-1941 \n\n\n\nThis presentation tells the remarkable history of how a group of pioneering Japanese fishermen\, along with a German Chef named “Pop” Ernest Doelter\, transformed a once thought uneatable mollusk into a gastronomical delight and making Monterey the Abalone Capitol of the World. \n\n\n\nTim Thomas is a fisheries historian and author who has researched the fisheries and cultural history of Monterey for over forty years. For sixteen years he was the Historian/Curator for the Monterey Maritime Museum.  He is on the board of directors of the Monterey Japanese American Citizens League and Curator of Japanese American Heritage Center. Tim has traveled and lectured extensively on the Monterey Japanese community both in the United States and in Japan. In 2023\, The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary awarded Tim the Ed Ricketts Memorial Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Field of Historical Ecology. \n\n\n\nBob EneaThe Sicilian Experience and Fisherman’s Wharf \n\n\n\nThis presentation focuses on the history of the Monterey sardine fishing industry through photos and descriptions that made Monterey the Sardine Capital of the World.  Bob’s grandfather\, Orazio Enea\, and great uncle\, Pietro Ferrante\, were the pioneer fishermen of the sardine industry. \n\n\n\nBob Enea is a retired Physical Education teacher and football and swimming coach. He is a member of the Italian Heritage Society\, where he serves as historian.  Bob has authored many articles for the Santa Rosalia Festival magazine. DESCRIPTION:Myron Oliver was one of the founders of the Monterey History and Art Association in 1931. His home\, the de la Torre adobe on Pierce Street is on the market. \n\n\n\nMHAA membership has been graciously invited to tour the adobe by Angolee Bode of CØMPASS Realty. \n\n\n\nThe adobe is located at 500 Pierce Street just above Friendly Park. \n\n\n\n\nMyron and His Mother\n\n\n\nLiving Room\n\n\n\n\nOpen House and Self-guided Tour Invitation \n\n\n\nMyron Oliver (1891 – 1967) \n\n\n\nIn 1893 Joseph Kurtz Oliver\, brought his family to Pacific Grove where he had accepted a position as art instructor in a new college. The school foundered\, so Mr. Oliver opened an art-supplies store near Monterey’s pier. His young son\, Myron\, worked there and met practically all the artists who came to the Monterey Peninsula because they all came to Father Oliver’s store for supplies. By 1919 Myron was attending Stanford University\, and that summer William Merritt Chase taught in Carmel-by-the-Sea under the auspices of the Carmel Arts and Crafts Club. Myron traded his services as a chauffeur to the great man in exchange for lessons. Like Myron\, Effie Fortune and Armin Hansen were also founders of the Monterey History and Art Association. In February 1924 Myron Oliver and his wife became owners of the de la Torre adobe and thereafter remade the adobe into the beautiful home structure it is today.

Later\, during five years of world travel\, mostly in Asia and Africa\, he developed an interest in ethnographical photography that eventually led him to his first professional assignment as a U.S. government photographer recording the endangered folk cultures of Appalachia. \n\n\n\nSeeing the destructive results of corporate resource extraction\, Tress began to use his camera to raise environmental awareness about the economic and human costs of pollution. Focusing on New York City\, he began to photograph the neglected fringes of the urban waterfront with a straight documentary approach. This gradually evolved into a more personal mode of “magic realism” combining improvised elements of actual life with stage fantasy that became his hallmark style of directorial fabrication.  In the late 1960s Tress was inspired to do a series based upon children’s dreams that combined his interests in ritual ceremony\, Jungian archetypes\, and social allegory. Later bodies of work evolved from this theatrical approach. \n\n\n\nTress began shooting in color in the early 1980s.  Fascinated by medical equipment in an abandoned hospital\, Tress created and photographed room-sized painted sculptural installations.  This led to smaller-scale explorations of narrative still life within a children’s toy theater\, then within a portable nineteenth-century aquarium. \n\n\n\nTress moved to Cambria in 1992\, where he lived for 25 years.  Once there he completed a series exploring inner spaces of the mind\, for which Tress created backlit\, hyperreal dioramas containing transparencies\, glass and objects\, then photographed them.  Tress then returned to black-and-white photography\, with a dozen series to date\, including a few diamond-formatted ones. \n\n\n\nIn 2023\, the Getty Center in Los Angeles presented Rambles\, Dreams and Shadows\, the first major exhibition to chronicle the early career of Tress.  During the exhibition\, the Getty Center hosted the world premiere of the film Arthur Tress: Water’s Edge\, an immersive dive into the life\, vision and processes of the artist. \n\n\n\nTress comes from a Jewish background; his parents immigrated from Europe.  Tress knew he was gay from a young age.  Tress has said that “growing up as a gay man in the 1950s was not easy\, especially at school.  Even in the 1960s\, there was still a lot of bad feeling\, a criminal aspect and a sense of guilt.”  \n\n\n\nTress currently resides in San Francisco. \n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://vimeo.com/781669253\n\n\n\n\nFlyer \n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by Monterey History & Art and Center for Photographic Art

The Native Daughters of the Golden West – Junipero Parlor 141\, invites the community to enjoy a talk by Amelia Ward about local Monterey County history on Monday\, September 8th from 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm. The presentation will be held at Casa Serrano\, a beautiful historic adobe owned by the Monterey History & Art Association\, located at 412 Pacific Street in Downtown Monterey. \n\n\n\nThe lecture will focus on “Stokes Adobe: A Monterey Landmark’s Storied Past” and Amelia will discuss the rich and colorful history of Stokes Adobe. \n\n\n\n\nAmelia Ward\, a native of the Monterey Peninsula\, is a writer\, editor\, and amateur historian whose interest lies in the stories of the individuals who helped shape the artistic communities of the Monterey Peninsula and the San Francisco Bay Area. She is the editor of Carmel Magazine and is currently coauthoring a book on the artists and architecture of Old Monterey with her husband\, artist and gallerist Joaquin Turner\, and Professor Emeritus Cynthia Wagner-Weick. \n\n\n\n\nFollowing the lecture\, there will be refreshments.A $10 donation is suggested.
