The Road of Renown presents a significant new interpretation of the history of today’s 17-Mile Drive and connects the early auto racing history at Del Monte with the development of auto touring to the world famous resort.
Hotel Del Monte’s original macadam road to Cypress Point was hailed for its dust free ride when completed in 1881. The Los Angeles Herald praised the road work. “The drives are the most romantic on the American continent…hewn through lofty and almost impervious forests, the celebrated Monterey cypress grove and the lovely Carmel Bay.”
Hotel Del Monte resurfaced the road with bitumen in 1888 and, in the following year, called it the Eighteen Mile Drive while proclaiming the road to be “the grandest drive on the continent.”
