Myron Oliver (1891 – 1967)

In 1893 Joseph Kurtz Oliver, brought his family to Pacific Grove where he had accepted a position as art instructor in a new college. The school foundered, so Mr. Oliver opened an art-supplies store near Monterey’s pier. His young son, Myron, worked there and met practically all the artists who came to the Monterey Peninsula because they all came to Father Oliver’s store for supplies. By 1919 Myron was attending Stanford University, and that summer William Merritt Chase taught in Carmel-by-the-Sea under the auspices of the Carmel Arts and Crafts Club. Myron traded his services as a chauffeur to the great man in exchange for lessons. Like Myron, Effie Fortune and Armin Hansen were also founders of the Monterey History and Art Association. In February 1924 Myron Oliver and his wife became owners of the de la Torre adobe and thereafter remade the adobe into the beautiful home structure it is today.
