The Perry-Downer Carriage
House
Hidden
behind Perry-Downer House’s mature trees and several feet below the
present grade level is the tiny Carriage House. Now primarily used for
special events, the Carriage House is another tale of historic rescue.
Sometime between the main home’s kitchen addition in 1906 and
mid-century, a garage shed was added at the back of the property. By the
time Maggie and Webster Downer acquired the dilapidated Perry House in
1966, the garage was derelict.
In 1968, Herbert L. Lawson, A.I.A., of San Francisco transformed it into
a garden shop, Baume and Blume (a company which is still in operation,
now in Carmel Valley) for the Downers. The Carriage House’s most
remarkable feature is its oval stained-glass ceiling light.
