About Noticias
Noticias,
the quarterly journal of the Monterey History & Art Association, bears a
long and distinguished tradition. Founded by Donald Munroe Craig, author
of an important book on the correspondence of Alcalde Walter Colton’s
secretary, it was subsequently edited by Amelie Elkinton, Monterey’s
first official historian; eminent art historian Betty Hoag McGlynn; and
historian Virginia Stone.
Noticias has been highly praised in many quarters. R. Aidan Martin,
director of Vancouver’s Reefquest Center, wrote of Tim Thomas’s
Basking Sharks issue: “a fascinating and well-written text, both
useful and fun-to-read. Intriguing archival photos in high-quality
reproduction invite the reader to savor the details.” The head librarian
of the Bancroft Library sent a warm acknowledgment of the Jo Mora issue.
Malcolm Margolin, publisher of an impressive list of California titles
under Heyday Books, wrote of Julie Cain’s Hotel del Monte Landscape
issue: “How beautifully the text and photos bring to life a
wonderful, lost world...that arose from the mists and then disappeared.
Utterly first-class.”
Subscribe now to receive the Diamond Jubilee series coinciding with
MHAA’s 75th anniversary in 2006. One issue will feature the Reverend
McGowan and his wife, Dr. Julia McGowan, builders of Monterey’s first
Presbyterian Church (now the Mayo Hayes O’Donnell Library; another will
discuss “the making of a preservationist” about Amelie Elkinton.
