MISSION: The Monterey History and Art Association…..sharing the histories and the diverse legacies of people, stories, and places that continue to shape Monterey.
“A museum is not about its collections, but about the conversations it holds with its constituents”*
The city of Monterey has given us the “green light” to start the exciting, challenging project of assessing the collection, and redoing the interior of the museum. We are planning to re-open for our 80th Anniversary in 2011. We will be asking the community for their involvement in making MHAA a vibrant museum and helping to tell the many stories of the maritime, fishing, and historical importance of the Monterey Peninsula.
Our overall goals for the next 12-18 months includes:
Shaping the story told at the museum
Instituting professional collections management standards
Retaining skilled and professional staff
Developing relevant education and outreach programs
Overhauling fundraising efforts
Improving communication with constituents.
We have hit the ground running and have already accomplished the following:
Moved objects out of the collection room and attic to be properly assessed and catalogued.
Hired two PT registrars, one FT registrar, one PT bookkeeper.
In the process of hiring a FT Development Coordinator and FT Education Coordinator in the late Spring.
Five grants will be completed in the month of January for collections, children’s exhibitions, children’s educational programs, and historic preservation and Interpretive Plan.
