Perry-Downer House and Costume Gallery > The MHAA Costume Collection

The Monterey History and Art Association Costume CollectionThe Perry-Downer House Costume Gallery will
be closed for a comprehensive inventory of the collection until further notice. With more than
5,000 items, the collection includes artifacts from
the area’s original families and is maintained by
the volunteers of the costume committee.

Founded in 1979 by Nancy and Jeanne Graham, the MHAA Costume Collection is the only museum on the Central Coast of California devoted entirely to apparel related to the history of the Monterey Peninsula and the state of California.

With more than 5000 items, the Collection includes artifacts from the area’s original families as well as treasures from more recent arrivals. It is maintained by volunteers, who mount three or four exhibits of clothes, accessories, and needlecrafts from the collection annually, including a new Weddings show each June and a popular “Little Black Dress” exhibit.
