June 6, 2009 - The Merienda
The
Merienda is a birthday party for Monterey and we love to celebrate!
The beautiful Memory Garden behind the Old Pacific House (a State
Historical Monument) is the site for a giant barbeque with wine,
music and entertainment for all to share. The birthday cake is a
wonder to behold—6 layers high and bedecked with living roses!
Our City was founded on June 3, 1770, when
Padre Junípero Serra, father of the California missions, and Captain
Gaspar de Portola, a Spanish military leader, joined forces to
establish the pueblo of Monterey, California’s first Capital. The
first modern Merienda was celebrated in 1929, two years before the
formation of the Monterey History & Art Association. Since 1931 the
party has been presented by the MHAA.
This year, this wonderful party will be held
on Saturday, June 6, 2009. More information will be available in
early spring, 2009. This event is open to all, but you will want to
become a member of MHAA for early
notice!! |
